Daguerreotype, well-dressed bald man with one finger pressed up against his cheek! Did he have a toothache? Or was it some sort of secret sign? He also appears to be holding an object in his other hand.. to me it looks like a piece of chalk, but I'm not sure. I have had comments from people familiar with sign language that this man could be making the sign for "Deaf"... if he's holding chalk, it's possible he was a teacher of hearing impaired people.
He is not identified. This is a half-plate daguerreotype in half of a case, measuring 6" x 4.75". It's unsealed. The plate has several tarnish and/or haze spots.. they should all be visible in my scan, but I took a bunch of cell phone pics just in case. Other than the tarnish/haze it's a very nice sharp image with no obvious damage. A dag cleaner might be able to make quick work of the tarnish/haze spots, they look light enough, but for the sake of this listing assume they are permanent. I did clean the underside of the glass but
