Two rare original CDVs of Joseph Hutton Defrees (1812-1885), U.S. Congressman. Born in Tennessee, Defrees moved to Indiana and established the Northwestern Pioneer newspaper in 1831. Later, he was the Sheriff of Goshen County, a member of the Indiana House of Representatives and Indiana State Senate. In 1865, around the time this portrait was taken and signed, Defrees was elected as a Republican to the 39th Congress, serving there until 1867. Defrees was also President of the Cincinnati, Wabash & Michigan Railroad.
First CDV is signed in ink, with a studio imprint of M.B. Brady, Washington and New York. Second CDV has no imprint. Both CDVs are about 4" x 2.5" CDV and in very good or better antique condition.
