Historically significant, original ambrotype photograph of James Clerk Maxwell FRS FRSE (13 June 1831 – 5 November 1879) the Scottish physicist and mathematician. He is best remembered as the creator of the electromagnetic theory of light waves and is also credited with developing the first permanent color photograph in 1861.
1/6 plate ambrotype is in its original wall frame, behind cover glass, and passe-partout mount. Maxwell is casually posed with a cigar in one had and a stereoviewer partially visible on the table. Identified on the back.
Ambrotype is in very good antique condition with a few light nicks and tight mat abrasions; the frame is in very good antique condition with some surface wear and come cracks, which are stable.
