Rare original original cabinet card (6.5" x 4.25") of the beautiful Georgina Moncrieffe, Countess of Dudley, taken by photographer to the royals and portrait painter Arthur James Melhuish, London.
Born Georgina Elisabeth Moncrieffe in 1846, she was the daughter of Sir Thomas Moncrieffe, 7th Bt., and Lady Louisa Hay-Drummond. On 21 November 1865 she became the second wife of William Ward, 1st Earl of Dudley (second creation, 1860). The theft of Lady Dudley's jewels on 12 December 1874 at Paddington Station was a famous crime in Victorian England. The jewels were worth around £25,000 and were never recovered. During the Boer War and World War I, Lady Dudley served with the British Red Cross Society. In late 1900, she was involved in running the Mayfair nursing home for disabled officers under the auspices of the Red Cross. She died on 2 February 1929, at the age of 82.
