Large original albumen photo showing a crowd, including a Union band and the person of honor, a young African American man who is seated in a wheelbarrow.
The large group is gathered in front of a hotel to celebrate the Emancipation Proclamation of January 1, 1863. This was the Exchange Hotel in downtown Methuen, Massachusetts - the crowd had a bet, based on the result of Congress's vote, that the loser would have to wheel the young black man all the way to Lawrence, Mass!
This is a very rare and significant image - a February, 2011 article in Newsweek described the one that was used in their story as the only known example at that time, and this is the only other example I personally know about.
The dimensions of the entire piece, including the mat, are 16.5" x 13.5" which is too large to fit on my scanner, so I took one off cell phone pics which I uploaded directly from my phone, completely unedited.
Condition is overall very good with some minor issues, all which should be apparent in my photos. The albumen is affixed to the mount and the original paper mat goes over the top, but as you can see, is detached. No doubt at one time it was framed behind glass...
