This gruesome CDV is a photograph taken of the severed heads of Greek brigands hung up on what looks like a cloth covered wall. Back mark is The London Steroscopic & Photographic company. Overall the image is in very good antique condition, though the bottom of the mount has been slightly cropped. Dimensions are 3 15/16" x 2 1/2".
Backstory: On 11 April 1870 a group of English travelers which included Lord and Lady Muncaster, Mr Vyner, Mr Lloyd, Mr Herbert and Count De Boyl were captured at Oropos in Greece by a group of brigands and a ransom of Twenty Five Thousand Pounds was demanded. Lord and Lady Muncaster were set free to negotiate the ransom but when the Greek Government sent troops to pursue the captors the remaining prisoners were murdered. The brigands were finally caught and beheaded.
