Rare original cabinet photo (8.5" x 5.25" boudoir mount) of Colonel William Elmendorf Rothery (1851-1932), photographed at one of the dwellings in the Liberian Exhibit at the 1893 World's Columbian Exhibition / Chicago World's Fair. The photographer was Miss Garrity of Chicago. Rothery was a successful businessman, newspaper editor and diplomat, appointed U.S. Consul to Liberia, and in 1892 was chosen to be Liberian Commissioner to the World's Fair.
On the back in period ink Rothery has signed and dated the photo, New Year's Day, 1895.
