Rare original, 6th plate ambrotype showing a man smoking a pipe. Affixed to the back is a piece of paper with the following handwritten note in pencil:
Taken in Cigar Box Camera
by myself and of myself
AH
Although we only have the initials, this was purchased out of a Philadelphia estate, and research shows that in 1854, Asa Haines advertised as a "photographist" at 159 Chestnut Street there. In later directories he was only listed as "Cigars". I think it's very likely "AH" = Asa Haines, but of course I can't guarantee it.
Ambrotype is uncased as found. Very good antique condition.
My photos show how it appears under my desktop lamp, taken with my cell phone and uploaded straight to this listing with NO editing.. it should appear this way or better when viewed in hand, in daylight and/or proper lighting. The second pic is a scan, which is how it looks in my below average indoor lighting - will look much closer to pic #1 in proper indoor or outdoor lighting.
If you have any questions about this, please ask before purchasing.
