Original c.1849-1854 sixth-plate (1/6) daguerreotype of young VMI cadets. Their buttons, and the ring of the cadet in the center are painted gold. They are wearing Virginia Military Institute uniforms. In half of its original case, measuring 3.75" x 3.25". Paper seals are no longer intact, though most remain attached to image, as shown. Tarnish ring, and very light haze around the mat's edge. No dings or significant damage to the plate, but I did spot some very light and small scratches and/or swipes around the middle of the image. I couldn't really get them to show up on the scan or my camera shot, and in person they are hard to see from most angles, so I would say they don't detract from the image.
