Original half-plate 1850s ambrotype photo showing a drawing of a man's head that is made up entirely of nude or barely dressed woman. On the bottom is printed "LA TURK". An interesting image.. would it be considered an anthropomorphic optical illusion??? I've actually seen this image before, but only in smaller sizes, 1/9 and 1/6 plates, nothing close to this size, though they probably exist.. I would think.
Comes in its original leather case that measures 6" x 4.75" when closed. Separated covers.
The ambrotype is made of of two pieces of glass that are sealed together. The back glass is painted black, and the paint has some crazing in it that shows through at certain angles. Also, when held at an angle, some of "air bubbles", common in this type of ambrotype, are visible, though when viewing normally they do not detract. Overall the image is in very good antique condition.
