This is an amazing set of Civil War era photos of young African American children. In the 20+ years I've been collecting, this is only the second time I have owned photos of these children.. the first two, also a CDV and gem tintype, sold long ago.
They are unidentified, but the studio imprint on the back of the CDV is for a Bangor, Maine studio (forgot to scan the back but can do so on request). Years ago it was suggested that they were related to the great abolitionist Frederick Douglass, but I was never able to confirm that.
The CDV is 4" x 2.5" and is in very good antique condition with a minor curl to the mount. The little gem tintype is only about 1" tall and is in excellent condition. It looks as if it was probably taken at least several months before the CDV... interestingly, they are in the same positions.
Finding this pair together again might be near impossible!
