Sad Death In Cumberland: Mr. Arthur Shriver, publisher, printer and book binder of Cumberland and a man well known in this community and for years connected with the Cumberland Daily News when under the management of Col Henry J. Johnston, a brother of our fellow townsman, W.C. Johnston, Esq., was found dead on Monday afternoon last under very peculiar circumstances and that made his demise very distressing. He had not been seen by any one after late Friday evening of last week but his non-appearance at his place of business on Saturday occasioned no uneasiness as he often remained away for a day when not feeling well and when he was not seen by any one in Cumberland on Sunday, it was thought that he had gone to his family who were spending the summer at Winchester, Va, but not appearing on Monday and the receipt at his place of business of letters postmarked at Winchester and evidentially from his wife, considerable anxiety was occasioned. The day passing and no knowledge of his whereabouts coming to hand, search was made and two of his employees after forcing themselves into his residence were shocked almost beyond expression to find him dead, lying on a bed on the second story undressed the gas still burning and every indication that he had gone to bed Friday night and had soon thereafter died without a struggle of any kind as everything in the room was in its usual order. During the absence of his family, he had been taking his meals at a hotel but sleeping at home. He had been a sufferer from facial neuralgia and it is supposed that after going to bed he had a heart attack of that ailment and passed off at once. The body when found was much decomposed as it had evidently been lying there for about 50 hours. His death is a shock to the whole community.
