Two half plate daguerreotypes in matching cases, both by Root, acquired together and probably taken in the same sitting.
Each is stamped at the bottom of their mats:
M.A. & S. ROOT
363 BROADWAY N.Y.
Case is 6" x 4.25" closed.
Long haired man: Dag is unsealed with most of its original seals stuck to the back of the plate. The image is tarnished with several swipes.. these are mostly light and to me appear a lot less exaggerated when viewing in person than they are in my photos. Most are light and in the background, though there are a couple of heavier swipes, most notably on his lapel. All swipes are mostly noticeable when viewed at an angle. The glass fits loosely in the case, so it should be handled with care. The plate and mat fit securely in the case, but the glass is a little loose and will come out if not handled with care. The case is complete, though the covers are separated and have light repair tape residue.
Bearded man: Seals are broken, underside of the glass is a bit dirty. There is a small scratch on his forehead, otherwise the image looks very good. Case covers are separated.
