Very rare and original CDV of Father DeSmet, who was the first Catholic missionary to the Indians of the Platte and upper Missouri region. Born in Belgium, he was the most active missionary in the western world for over 30 years. He explored the plains and mountains, crossed the continent several times, founding missions wherever he went. This photo was taken by Nichols & Howard of St. Louis, Missouri.
The bottom of the mount has been trimmed, and the CDV is 3.5" x 2.5", otherwise very good. There is a name in period pencil on the back.
