Original circa 1854, sixth-plate (1/6) daguerreotype of a little boy and his dog. Inside the case is writing.. It's readable in hand but I enhanced the scan for this listing. The writer has some interesting flourishes but I believe the writing says: John T. Winslow West Northwood N.H. Aged 8 years 3 months Curls (?) 8 y 4 months In half of a case.
The plate has a tarnish ring and areas of other tarnish and tarnish spots and I see a few tiny mat abrasions up against the mat but the dag has intact seals, so this was likely done by the original photographer. Underside of the glass has specks and fuzz. No swipes or dings or corrosion noted. Looking under magnification there does appear to be some extremely light scratches, possibly, on the dog's nose... I've seen this manner of scratching occur from the the photographer's tinting brush... though I have to say I'm not even 100% sure they are scratches... again, it's sealed.
