Very rare 1890s tintype showing two African American baseball players! These men were teammates on the Rattlers, an all-black baseball team out of Wichita, Kansas, that operated around 1890-1900, right in the middle time frame of this c.1895 image. The players are in full uniform with the seated one holding a bat.
They are not identified, but here are some names of Rattlers who could be possibilities: Charley Strawn (Pitcher - 1896 to 1897) Sam Collins (Shortstop & Catcher - 1900) Fred Holton Left Fielder, Pitcher, First Base & Catcher - 1896) Frank Kennedy (Center Field - 1900) ? Bufford (Pitcher 1900) ? Kendall (Pitcher - 1900 - He had one arm.)
Tintype is about 3.25" x 2.5" with light bends and light surface wear. My scans of tintypes always seems to come out darker than how the original images appear in bright lighting or daylight. In proper lighting this tintype looks very good, definitely nicer than my scan.
