TWO very rare original CDV photos by Brady, members of an 1868 Chinese/US diplomatic mission. Images offered here include two Chinese ministers, and Anson Burlingame with interpreters.

Burlingame was the U.S. minister to the Qing Empire of China, appointed by Lincoln, from 1862-1867. In 1868, the Emperor appointed Burlingame envoy extraordinary and minister plenipotentiary to head a Chinese diplomatic mission to the United States and several European nations. The envoy included the two  ministers (Chih Kang, left, Sun Chia Ku, right), an English and a French secretary (interpreters), six students from Peking, and a large attending group, all of which arrived in the United States in March 1868 - that is when the CDVs I am offering here were taken.

The names of the French and English interpreters seated with Burlingame were M. Emile DesChamps, left, and Sir John McLeavy Brown, right. They both were residents of Peking, China at the time of their appointments.

See listing photo #6, also taken by Brady, which shows Burlingame with the same two ministers in the CDV I am offering. Listing photo #6 is shown here for reference only and is not included.

CDVs are both 4" x 2.5" and in very good antique condition overall. There is a light wrinkle on the back of the photos of the Chinese ministers - as you can see in the enlargement it's not very visible on the front, if at all. Any darkness seen on the back is just a shadow, probably from my cell phone - it’s not on the original photo. The Burlingame CDV is in very good or antique condition. A tiny area of the image is lifting along the right edge.

An extremely rare pairing of Brady CDVs.

Boxed & signed FedEx overnight is included.
