A rare pose of Moung Thanbyah (b.1841), ink signed on the back. Original CDV photo.

Thanbyah was a prominent Sgaw Karen intellectual, author, and Baptist missionary from Burma (now Myanmar). He was known for his work with the Baptist Mission Society in Burma and for being an early Karen nationalist. He studied for three years at the Government School in Rangoon, before coming to this country and enrolling in Shurtleff College in Illinois. In 1874, he graduated from the Rochester Theological Seminary and also earned a Master of Arts degree from the University of Rochester. Thanbyah was also instrumental in the founding of the Karen National Association (KNA). He became its first president and used his platform to advocate for Karen interests and identity
