Sixth-plate, 1840s daguerreotype of a woman wearing a bonnet and eyeglasses. She is identified only as "Simpson" by a period note inside of the case.
This image was out of the estate of the noted physicist Dr. Charles Walter McCutchen of Princeton, who died in 2020. McCutchen was the great-grandson of Dr. Josiah Simpson, who was a surgeon during the Civil War, and who had a hospital named after him. Dr. Josiah Simpson's daughter, Mary Isabella, married C.W. McCutchen in 1880, and their son Brunson was Dr. Charles Walter McCutchen's father. So the woman in this dag is a relative, I'm just unsure who it is. Possibly Josiah's mother, Mary Bronson Simpson.
Thick plate behind heavy glass, tarnish ring. It seemed like I broke the original seals when removing it from the case, but looking close under magnification I see some very faint swipes and mat abrasions. The focus is not strong. Housed in a nice 1840s leather case that is complete and intact with no repairs.
Shipping: First Class (well-packed mailer). Boxed Priority also available.
