Looks like he’s holding a closed MOP case. The curl of hair was likely, but not necessarily his; if this portrait was taken for memorial purposes, the hair might have belonged to a deceased sibling whose portrait he is holding inside of that MOP case. He looks pretty sad/unhappy as well...
