Two daguerreotypes, members of the Hillyer family, an important family from Wisconsin, originally part of a large group of 1850s/1860s images of the Hillyer and Armour family, purchased out of a Wisconsin estate.

**** These are both 1/6 plate **** but the sizes appear different in my first scan because they were scanned and edited separately and then combined into one image for this listing...

Daguerreotype #1: 6th plate daguerreotype of Captain Edwin Hillyer in his masonic vest. Hillyer was an interesting man - one of a few Waupun, Wisconsin men who made the overland trip to California in 1849 to try to strike it rich in the Gold Rush. He wrote a journal on his trip, which has been published,
called:

"From Waupun to Sacramento in 1849: The Gold Rush Journal of Edwin Hillyer"

Hillyer was also a member of the Wisconsin Legislature, and served in the Civil War, Captain, 10th Regiment, Wisconsin Infantry, Co. K.

Dag #1 is still sealed and is in its original case, which is complete and intact. Case is 3.75" x 3.25" when closed. Dag has a light tarnish ring with no damage noted.

Daguerreotype #2: Circa 1855 6th plate daguerreotype Hillyer's daughter in a hand-tinted red dress, holding a small purse. She is unidentified anywhere on the photo, but based on other photos acquired of her family, I believe that her name was Martha Jane Hillyer, daughter of Edwin and Angeline Coe Hillyer. Martha Jane was born on November 10, 1851, and died in 1867 at only fifteen years old.

Dag #2 is in half of a case. There are a couple of abrasions where the mat rubbed the plate, but these are small. The rest of the plate is undamaged and clean.. the specks seen in my scan are on the underside of the glass. The seals are mostly in place but
probably not completely intact.
