Original 1/6 daguerreotype of Elizabeth Custis Teakle Wallis (BIRTH 21 NOVEMBER 1790 • Talbot Co MD, DEATH 30 JULY 1854 • Capon Springs VA), identified on the back of the case. This was taken very close to the time of her death, so I would say sometime in early-to-mid 1854, and she was probably dressed in mourning for her son Philip, who died of yellow fever in October 1853.
Elizabeth was the mother of Severn Teackle Wallis, the American lawyer and politician.
Dag is housed in a nice, push-button pebbled leather case which is in excellent condition. The dag is no longer sealed and the glass could be cleaned, but other than the tarnish ring the condition appears to be excellent.
