Sixth-plate daguerreotype of Walter Cresson, identified and dated 1840 by a note that was found behind the image. The Cressons were a respected family from Philadelphia. There are several known portraits of them taken by Robert Cornelius; I own two, including another of Cresson, signed and dated by Cornelius in his original frame (separate listing).
The dag I am offering here is unmarked and unsigned, but I'm confident the photographer was Cornelius.
The dag is housed in its full original case. The seals are no longer intact and here are some small mat abrasions visible under magnification. Obviously the plate is tarnished, but my scan doesn't show the image in its best light; he is actually very visible at certain angles when viewing in hand. Cresson is wearing a suit, bow tie and spectacles.
