Ninth-plate daguerreotype of a girl, mat stamped "Beard" "Patentee". Sealed, with a rare Wharton's brass pan / mat, which was made in the United Kingdom under Wharton's patent of 24 August 1841... which makes this an early dag.. maybe circa 1842.

Dag is in very good antique condition. Leather, flip-top case is complete with separated covers. The railed in the upper-right corner are separating a bit but still stable.

Richard Beard (1801 - 1885) was more entrepreneur than photographer. He secured the patent for both the Daguerreotype process in England and the Johnson and Wolcott camera in the early 1840s and set about making the whole process more commercially viable. He set up a chain of studios across London and then licensed other photographers to operate these studios.
