
Rare original CDV of union camp for confederate prisoners in Elmira, New York. The camp was nicknamed "Hellmira," by the prisoners. This CDV shows the camp interior taken from a platform overlooking Water Street. Built on 30 acres of the former Camp Rathburn, Elmira opened in July 1864 and ultimately held over 12,000 enlisted Confederate POW's, nearly 3,000 of who died of disease and exposure. Original dated 1864 tax stamp on the back.
CDV is 4" x 2.5" and in very good antique condition overall.
