Amazing and very rare gem tintype of children of freed slaves, who were photographed to help promote the education of former slaves and their children. The children would travel to different cities and would give recitals and other demonstrations to show that they could be educated as well as white children.

I've owned a CDV of these same children taken in Bangor, Maine.. one of the cities they visited. The Williston School in Wilmington, North Carolina, was founded in 1866 by the abolitionist American Missionary Association after the Union army occupied the city during the Civil War.

This little gem tintype is in very good antique condition and is no more than 1" tall.

Very rare find! This is only the second one I have ever owned.. the next might not come around for another 25 years :)
