1850s, 1/6 daguerreotype of a sad looking little girl wearing what might be a tinted, red coral necklace and holding an open daguerreotype in her lap... very possibly a portrait of a family member who was no longer living, and possibly even a post mortem photo of them.. though as you can see, the details are not visible, so we can't know for sure. I have, however, seen examples of Victorian mourning hairwork jewelry featuring red coral.
The mat is stamped with the photographer's name, "McELROY", beneath the photo.
Dag is in half of a leather case, missing its cover. The original seals are flaking but appear to be intact and not tampered with. The underside of the glass is dirty; the dag itself is in very good condition with a tarnish ring. From a couple of angles I can see some very light
dings that do not detract.
