The medal ID's him as James Conway, 28th NYSM. The back of the medal is blank. Researching that name I found a record for a James Conway who served in the 131st NY Infantry, who was killed in battle on May 27, 1863 at the Siege of Port Hudson in Louisiana. The only other James Conway I found in a New York regiment was in his 40's... too old to be the soldier shown here. The age of death given on the record is 18, but I've found that those are often a couple or few years off, based on an incorrectly estimated birth year. This is just a potential match that will require more research. Note, the scan of the service record is provided for reference and a hard copy is not included. Ruby ambrotype comes in its full case behind mat and glass and is in very good to excellent antique condition, with a few small mat abrasions, as shown. Case is complete but the spine has been taped. Genealogical Info: William was born in Ireland, Hannah in Scotland.. they married in Kentucky in 1835 and had four children - a second girl named Hannah was born in 1847, a couple of years after this photo was taken. The dag is not marked by Plumbe but is housed in his basket of flowers case. Plumbe's "Louisville Gallery" was on Jefferson Street at this time.. I'm almost certain that is where this portrait was taken. Plate has tarnish ring and is no longer sealed, but most or all of the old seals are still in the case. I put two pieces of archival tape on the sides to keep the plate from sliding. Overall the image is in very good antique condition.. I can see a couple of light mat abrasions, mostly inside of the tarnish ring along the right side, a pinprick or two of green corrosion, and some tiny mold spiders. There is some very light, small scratching on a couple of the people.. so small and light that I think they possibly could have been left by the colorist's brush, but assume they are post-1845 scratches. The spine of the case has been repaired with leather and it's missing one clasp. The inside corners on the image side are slightly separating but are stable and repairable. There is a little nick on the glass way above the girl's head; and there are a few small mat abrasions, but most, maybe all of these appear to be on the outside of the tarnish ring, and should normally be covered by the mat which has shifted very very slightly at some point.. it's stable now. The inside rail on the photo side is detached on the corners but still held in place.

Boxed and insured Priority Mail (US)

Great full plate tintype (8.5" x 6.5"). There are all sorts of dental tools and equipment on the table, as well as a newspaper titled "Dentistry". The dentist is holding pliers with a human tooth in it!

The original ink writing on the photo clearly makes it an advertising image for "Happy Hour Dental, Co.". There is no location or photographer (the back is blank, as produced), but searching my genealogy sites I found a Happy Hour Dental operating in Salt Lake City, Utah Territory, from 1890 (or earlier) until at least 1903. Behind the image is a great folded up note with some writing visible. The note in part mentions fighting in the war and being wounded at Gettysburg and meeting a rebel who "saved each others skin". It starts of with the word "These", so there were probably multiple images at one time, which might explain other parts of the note. On the other side of the note the writing says something about how to return the image(s) if found and there is an impression of an 1830s-1850s Liberty Head one-cent piece on the paper, perhaps to cover return postage.
