Most of the photos are from Georgia, Mississippi, or Alabama.. one ID'd man was photographed by J. Web, Brenham, Texas. A lot have studio names written on the page beneath their photos. Most are identified and some have been researched... there is a CDV of a little Tatum boy with his very young African American nanny; a CDV of a little boy who, about 70 years later, was murdered along with his daughter. That whole story is on the printout, which is included. The boy in the album next to him, Ralph Williams, grew up to be assistant surgeon general and Admiral in the Navy.. he has a wikipedia page (wiki/R._C._Williams) There are two ID'd men (in Civilian clothes) who served in the Confederate army during the Civil War. Also: military cadets, and a lady in a colorful costume ID'd as "Tucker" Boyd - there is only one of these in the album! My cell phone pics all came out a bit dark so I added a scan of Tucker to show more accurate brightness and detail. The album has condition issues.. several pages are falling out, but it appears to be complete. The photos are overall very good.. and look good when viewed in the album, but I noticed some are a bit trimmed. I honestly cannot remember offhand which ones are trimmed, it's been months since I took these pics and I would have to take the album out and look.. but I would be happy to do so. On January 4, around 2:20 pm, Commander Louis Kingsley died in his cabin. The next day, Navy Tug Wahneta came alongside the ship with stored and an undertaker with the Commander's casket. All hands mustered and placed the remains of Commander Kingsley on board Wahneta; the tug transferred the body to the Norfolk Navy Yard. The crew half-masted the ensign and jack. On January 6, Wahneta returned the Commander and his effects to Essex; again, all hands received the body on board. With half-masted colors and pennant, the ship stood down the York River, through Chesapeake Bay to Annapolis. Essex was under command of Lt. Commander F.M. Wise. The next day, Essex moored to the Naval Academy Wharf and transferred Kingsley's body to the Navy Academy Chapel. On January 8, a large number of the ship's complement attended Kingsley's funeral, the ship flew half-masted colors, and 7 minute guns were fired by the station during the funeral. The balloon is shown being inflated here; he eventually made an ascension and landed in Georgetown.

During the Civil War, the pilot James Allen was ordered to make reconnaissance flights.

Info found online:

"Allen’s flight attempts were short and anything but sweet. On July 8, 1861, he was ordered to make reconnaissance flights over Confederate forces near Washington. Allen made an attempt to inflate one of his two balloons on July 9, but his gas generator failed to operate sufficiently to fill the vessel. Allen decided to use city gas to inflate his balloon and then transport the inflated balloon by wagon. During a subsequent inflation attempt on July 14, Allen’s smaller balloon burst. Later, his larger airship was inflated, and 60 men from the 11th New York Zouaves were assigned to move it by hand to Falls Church, Va. They had towed the balloon only a short distance when a gust of wind came up and blew it into a telegraph pole, destroying it."

Large 10" x 8" albumen photo on its original 12" x 10" mat.
